Am I going to comment on every damn post in this RSS feed? Apparently.

I would have handled this a bit differently from Laura.

I believe my response to his original email would have been:

"How many copies? As many as the market will bear. Thank you for assuming that was my ass."

Hence "the greatest love story of our century," as Vanity Fair put it. I haven't read it in a very long time, but it just went right back on my list.

Carol Ann Duffy responds to the ban with a poem:

Mrs Schofield's GCSE
You must prepare your bosom for his knife,
said Portia to Antonio in which
of Shakespeare's Comedies? Who killed his wife,
insane with jealousy? And which Scots witch
knew Something wicked this way comes? Who said
Is this a dagger which I see? Which Tragedy?
Whose blade was drawn which led to Tybalt's death?
To whom did dying Caesar say Et tu? And why?
Something is rotten in the state of Denmark - do you
know what this means? Explain how poetry
pursues the human like the smitten moon
above the weeping, laughing earth; how we
make prayers of it. Nothing will come of nothing:
speak again. Said by which King? You may begin.

I always considered Lolita to be exploring the obsessive nature of a person in love, and using Humbert Humbert's fixation with young girls as a means of bringing that obsession into the foreground.

OMG, Gretchens last blog post: When in doubt, knit socks

OF INTEREST:

A great piece by Mark Lawson in The Guardian about the AQA exam board withdrawing a poem by Carol Ann Duffy from its syllabus. From the article:

It's easy to ridicule the AQA decision with rhetorical exaggeration. Better ban Macbeth in case year 11 march on Balmoral and slay the monarch. And censor Pride and Prejudice, because the girls might sit around waiting for their parents to find a husband for them. And don't let them read Alan Sillitoe in case the school's best runners throw the race at the next athletics meet.

Yet libertarians must acknowledge that the Duffy fuss is not as silly as that. There has been a legitimate concern that knife-crime in films or video games may encourage imitation, but I would argue that, in those cases, the danger is that young viewers are experiencing the scenes in isolation and as entertainment. Discussing violent urges in an educational context is clearly different.
