Ada Lovelace Day
Today, March 24, is Ada Lovelace Day, an international celebration of women in technology.
The day is named after Augusta Ada Byron, Countess of Lovelace, who is known as the first programmer for her work with Charles Babbage, creator of the mechanical general-purpose computer. Unlike Babbage and their contemporaries, Lovelace foresaw the potential of computers to expand beyond simple number-crunching. It is in her honor that the US Defense Department named the computer language Ada.
To commemorate the achievement and example set by this remarkable woman, and in celebration of this day, I want to bring to your attention a wonderful organization that has as its sole focus is the engagement, education and empowerment of women in technology, Girls In Tech.
Founded in 2007 by Adriana Gascoigne, hi5’s director of global communications, Girls in Tech was born out of a need to provide a place for women to cultivate ideas around their careers and business concepts involving technology.
