AYE, CAPTAIN! Lessons From #140tc
September 23, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
In terms of connecting with people, social media is not the end all be all. Twitter is not the end all be all. It all comes down to four key things: authenticity, trust, transparency, and relevance. It’s not the technology. It’s the connection.

10 Most Entertaining SXSWi Panel Submissions
August 21, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
So while all of you were bitching about how annoying it is to wake up to an avalanche of DMs from friends begging you to vote for their SXSW panels (or worse, badgering your friends with pleas so they’ll vote for your SXSW panel), I found a much better way to be inconvenienced: I sat around looking for the most entertaining panels submitted to next year’s Geek spring break. Enjoy.

Spontaneous Combustion? There’s An App For That
August 18, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
It’s a phone, a music player, an Internet device… and possibly a bomb. And it comes complete with a team of lawyers to make sure you don’t say a word about it! What is it? An Apple mobile device! Various sources online are currently reporting on exploding iPhones, iPods and iTouches.

#FFFact: The Friday Anti-Spam
August 14, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
Tired of #followfriday spamming up your Twitter stream? Mike Prasad has an idea: Follow Friday Fact (#FFFact). Here’s how it works: instead of listing all the people you think rock in one tweet or (God help us) a series of tweets, you name a single user and list an informative tidbit about them. Join the revolution–bring value back to recommendations!

We’re Not Sexist! It’s Not Our Fault There’s No Women In Tech!
August 13, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
This topic of whether women are properly represented in tech is a hot one, and it has a tendency to piss off a lot of people. I mean, why is it a conference’s fault that there are less women there when men make up three-fourths of the tech sector? The answer is annoyingly simple: because the stuff we’re making is, more often than not, not just for the tech sector. It’s for the web-using public. And fifty percent of this public is women.

August 12, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag

You can rely on your network, but imagine you don’t have an evolutionary biologist among your contacts? Enter Help A Reporter Out, or HARO. This is a sweet little service that ties journalists and bloggers with the sources they need–for free. Yeah, you read that right: free.

5 Really Short URL Shorteners
August 10, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
Twitter makes every character count, and when you’re sharing a link, the cardinal rule is to leave at least 20 characters for others to be able to comfortably retweet. URL shorteners have been around for a while, but with tr.im gone, few are still left. What are they, and what can they do?

Twiistup 6, Day 2: The Next Generation of L.A. Entrepreneurs #WakeUp, Discuss the Power of the Social Web
August 03, 2009, by AV Flox for LA Weekly
The hashtag for Twiistup 6’s “Leveraging the Power of the Social Web” panel, moderated by Tsavo’s Sean Percival, was #wakeup. That’s the peril of following a night of hard partying with a full day of serious conversation. Surprisingly, a good crowd gathered for discussion with bloggers Chris Brogan, president of the Web 2.0 marketing agency New Marketing Labs; Ben Huh, CEO of the absurdly successful ICanHasCheezburger; and Micah Baldwin, vice president of business development for Lijit Networks.

Twiistup 6 Mixer: the Producer, the VIPs, and the Stuff No One is Talking About
August 02, 2009, by AV Flox for LA Weekly
Twiistup creator Mike Macadaan once hailed L.A.’s premier tech event as a nod to the dot-com days of excess. Geeks got together in uniquely Los Angeles locales to network and party like rockstars. But Macadaan sold Twiistup to an undisclosed party a few months ago, and with new management came changes.

Twiistup’s Most Eligible Bachelors
July 29, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
Mommy blogger Jessica Gottlieb calls this season’s Twiistup attendee list a sausage party. She’s not wrong! It looks like this Twiistup’s flurry of great panels and new ventures showcase comes with an additional perk: a lengthy list of eligible bachelors. These are our faves…

HOORAY! UNFOLLOW FRIDAY!
July 24, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
If you’re one of those people whose self-esteem is linked to your follower count, this may be a sad time for you. Of course, you could look at it on the bright side and take the opportunity to unfollow all those annoying people whose feelings you’ve been trying to spare–until now!

Jury Overruled! MySpace Mom Acquitted of All Charges
July 4, 2009, by AV Flox for BlogHer
Imagine a world where a site’s terms of service were enforceable by law. A world where my convenient lie about my age amounted to “unauthorized access” of MySpace servers under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act—which was created in 1986 to deal with computer hackers. Under this act, the infraction could make me a felon. It almost happened.

#Spymaster: The Game, The Creators and the Drama
June 4, 2009, by AV Flox for BlogHer
Eston Bond (yes, that’s really his last name), a developer with iList, is the inspiration behind Spymaster, the game that took Twitter by storm. This interview with him and iList CEO Chris Abad explains the inner workings of the creation, inspiration and drama behind the game.

Some Digg, Others Kirtsy
May 29, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
They call kirtsy the woman’s answer to Digg. Now, I know plenty of women who use and enjoy Digg, both for getting content and for making their content available, but if there is one place where kirtsy transcends the popular social bookmarking site, it’s in its categories.

Mayday! Mayday! Event Overload!
May 21, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
It wasn’t that long ago that Los Angeles didn’t have much of a tech scene. Now, it feels like every night is jam-packed with networking events and panels. This bodes well for people who use these events to their advantage by actively seeking out new contacts in their industries, but what about the organizers of the events? In the past week, I’ve seen a couple of events moved to avoid overlapping—often to no avail.

On The Road
May 11, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
No one is entirely sure how Kurt Daradics (@KurtyD), Jolie O’Dell (@JolieODell), and Jonathan Dingman (@Dingman) ended up in that car, but what we do know is that their magical adventure (aptly named Roadtwip), has already taken them across Tennessee and Missouri, and brought them enough fodder to write their own hipster classic–fodder that already includes a run-in with the police, which is not entirely shocking, considering our favorite jailbird is on board.

Women Who Tech Annual Telesummit
May 5, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
Women may be catching up with men in terms of internet use, but they still make up less than 20 percent of panelists at major tech conferences. This is partly why Allyson Kapin, founding partner of Rad Campaign–a web communications firm specializing in design, development and marketing for non-profits and political campaigns–came up with Women Who Tech, a network of women who are breaking new ground in technology.

Will Twitter Die?
April 17, 2009, by AV Flox for lalawag
CNN reported on the milestones at Twitter (”a once-cultish site,” LOL), quoting Andrew Cherwenka, Huffington Post contributor and Trapeze.com developer: “A lot of people are saying this is going to be the death of Twitter, and I don’t understand that at all. It’s just another stage in Twitter’s acceleration.”

Greg Who? I Did It For Bill Bradley
August 13, 2008, by AV Flox for LA Snark
I’m an ADD info-whore and scandal-monger, a true product of the blogosphere’s anarchic, vitriolic, infotainment-driven citizen journalism. I want the story as it breaks, right or wrong, tangled in LOLspeak right in the palm of my hand in 140 characters or less. My Twitter stream, composed of a wild mix of web 2.0 pioneers and enthusiasts, kawasakied bloggers, graphic designers, relationship columnists and porn stars is a personalized aggregator of everything I feel I need to know (and a whole lot of things I don’t, but I’m a firm believer in oversharing).

  • AV Flox writes about web culture; new media’s gradual overthrow of old media; trends in social media; and the complicated entanglements people get themselves into as we venture forth into this new world where, more and more, the analog is colliding with the digital.
